Site of N. Ogarev’s and A. Herzen’s oath

In 1827 young men Alexander Herzen and Nikolay Ogarev, inspired by the events of the Decembrist revolt, swore an oath while walking up the hills of Vorob’evy Gory to fight until the end of their lives for the well-being of the people.

One and a half centuries later on the high slope of Vorobyovy Gory, the monument was installed in memory of the revolutionaries. The sculptor was M.A. Shmakov and the architects were Y.V. Ilin-Adaev and R.G. Kananin. The memorial was inaugurated on December 11, 1978.

The monument comprises granite blocks, walls clad in grey granite, a bronze scroll mounted in the left section with a bás-relief portrait image of Herzen and Ogarev facing each other. An inscription was etched into the wall: «Here in 1827, young men A. Herzen and N. Ogarev, both great revolutionaries and democrats, swore not to spare their lives in the struggle against autocracy.»
